Droopy, Curling Leaves (that look healthy otherwise)
Hi all!
Bought these two Phals from a high-end flower shop about a month and a half ago. The medium looks healthy and so do the roots. I didn’t think it was getting enough light so I’ve now moved it to a better spot by a north-facing window, so it now gets indirect light.I have a little bit of experience with orchid, so pretty sure I’m doing OK with watering. What causes the leaves to droop like this and start to curl? And shouldn’t I wait until after the blooms are gone to repot? Thanks!

In the third photo the mix looks very dry. The roots in the lower 2/3 of the pot, at least, should be green and the potting mix moist. You aren’t using the ice cube method, are you? I’d say “Not enough water”.

Phals don't need a lot of light - they do need light duration (which you can increase with an LED lamp). YI agree that it looks dehydrated.
You can repot a Phal at any time, even in bloom. If the medium is bad, do it. Get it out of that decorative pot - it is important that the roots have good air circulation. Otherise, the medium actually looks pretty good, very open. Run water through the pot (under the faucet), let drain well. Your goal is "humid air" in the root zone.

That's 100% lack of water. I had a few plants develop leaves like that and it was only mature or semi-mature leaves on plants that either had severely damage/dead roots or those i did not water enough. And unless it's from a proper nursery, the likelihood of the substrate being in good quality is pretty dang low. IMHO most phals need a repotting when you buy them.

Most people with Phals. in large bark need to water every 3-5 days, depending on ambient temperatures. In bark that large, with lots of air spaces, the plant would not be harmed by daily watering, unless temperatures are lower than ideal. However daily watering is not necessary.
When you do repot, consider your watering practices. Some people can't stop themselves from watering frequently. Their Phals. do better potted into large bark. Some people forget to water for long periods of time. They do better with medium to fine bark. People who only remember to water once a month do better with tightly packed sphagnum moss.
