Is my Orchid dead?
Default Is my Orchid dead?

Hi

I am quite new to orchids. So please be gentle with me. I bought this orchid a year or so ago and had been flowering nicely. The stalk then went all woody and it said to cut it right back so I did. Now I think I may have killed it 😭.

It seems to have some new leaf growth but that was before I cut it back.

Would anyone be able to advise?

Thank you so much

Welcome! Your orchid looks just fine to me - you have new root and leaf growth. I'm not sure why you think it is dead? If it continues to grow it will produce a new spike (this is what we call a stalk in the orchid world ), and you will see more flowers in time.

Thank you so much. I wasn't sure if the roots looked as healthy as they should do and was very much worried I had killed it when I'd cut it back. Also sorry about the stalk/spike mistake ☺️

Relative newbie here too...but it looks pretty good to me. If you haven't yet do a search for the care guides for it, and follow the directions. Make sure you give it some dilute fertilizer regularly and you will be surprised by how rewarded you will be....good luck!

The potting mix looks to be pretty old, so it may need to be repotted.

Welcome to the Orchid Board.

Phalaenopsis orchids like to have lots of air at the roots, warmth, moisture and shade. Most people repot every 2-4 years when growing in bark. When we buy them at a market they are generally ready to be repotted.

Have a look at a sticky thread here on growing Phals. From the left yellow menu choose Forums then Beginners. Near the top read the first few pages in The Phal. abuse ends here.
