These are mine, the first two are sesquipedales that I’ve had over two years, the last is sesquipedale x magdalenae. It’s totally normal for the lower stem to become bare, it will grow long roots down into the media that are as sturdy as stems. These all grow in a saucer of water or in semi-hydro pots with water reservoirs. The large one empties its resevoir daily. Since they are sitting in water and I don’t want to disturb them with repotting they are in leca. The large one is in a takeout soup container, and the smaller sesquipedale is in a large plastic cup.

I would never cut roots on these, even dead looking roots will grow new branching tips if given a source of water.

Before I started giving them lots of water they looked terrible like they had some kind of disease, and regularly lost lower leaves. They really turned around once they had constant access to water.
