Phalaenopsis hybrid with no real crown
Default Phalaenopsis hybrid with no real crown

Hello everyone,

I have had this orchid for a few weeks now and I can't understand what's wrong with it...
It seems like she doesn't have a real crown (as opposed to my other orchids) and 2 leaves fell of (see picture). It is not the bottom leaves so I don't think it is natural. I found a very small leaf growing inside of the medium. I checked the roots for root rot but they are great, green and plump. The "crown" is not mushy so I really do hope it is not crown rot. I always check if some water gets in there and in that case I dry it up.
It almost looks like the orchid has so many roots it is growing them through the stem making the leaves fall? But I've never heard of something like that...

Sorry for the stupid question

Thank you for letting me know, the token expired and I had to actualise the page and it did not save the images I uploaded!

It looks like it has been in that pot a long time, and the medium is breaking down. I suggest you not water until the medium dries completely, in preparation for repotting.

Do a little reading to see what is involved, and plan on repotting as soon as you can get the materials together. It will probably be fine in that pot, with new medium, after you wash the pot.

Read a few pages in a sticky thread here. From the left yellow menu choose Forums then Beginners. Near the top is the sticky thread The Phal. abuse ends here.

One other thing - when you repot, don't cut off any roots. It's very hard to tell whether they're really dead. You will find many videos online telling you to cut roots, but I think you shouldn't.

Thank you! I'm happy to hear you do not think she has something "deadly"
