I have over 40 orchids many species and I understand the leaves can take in water from the underneath side, so when I soak the roots in a bowl for watering, any leaves that hang down I am sure they hang in the water too.

Is this helping or hurting my orchids?

Thank you.

I have over 40 orchids, many species, and I understand leaves can take in water from the underside so when I soak pots in a bowl to water roots, any hanging leaves (Phals)) I make sure hang in the water too - always just the 1 - 3' of the tips.

Am I helping or hurting my orchids? I had seen videos with leaf tips in water but have read responses to those and they debunk that strategy and state NOT successful.

Thank you.

As a principle, it won't make any damage but as you live in a high humidity environment (at least that's what I think) make sure they get dry fast.
More important than that for the health of your plants is to not use the same water to soak several plants (disease transmission).

Orchids take in little or no water through the leaves. As epiphytes that get rained on and then dry out, they have evolved to conserve water - the cuticle on the leaves tends to keep water in. They depend completely on their roots to take in water and nutrients - that's why roots are so vital. Water the roots well, if the leaves get a bit wet won't hurt them, especially if they get a chance to dry. Butt the water on the leaves won't help them. It's all about roots...

orchidhope, you posted the same in two different forums. Don't worry about posting in the "correct" forum. Just post in one... if it is incorrect a Mod can move it.

Thanks.

I combined the two threads.

Thank you for your important forum clarification.

As I realized I was posting in the Beginner forum I got to thinking that it probably will not reach the accomplished orchid growers I would like to have respond.

Appreciate your assistance in this matter and I fully understand and will follow your instruction.
