Well, with mine I would say that over 90% dive back. The remainder divide between those that travel off up the branch, before the green tip dies and it acts as a anchor root,, and those that reach the end of the branch, and stick out a bit before giving up.

bil - remember, your relative humidity is pretty low much of the year. Orchid roots behave differently when relative humidity is high.

My epiphyte orchids (Catts, Oncidiums, Dens, etc.) are the opposite of bill's. They love the sun and the clear pots and all head to the outside of the pot interior or fill the entire clear pot and come thru holes and wander all over when left for more than a years or two. You see tons of roots in my clear pots. In nature they grow on trees and are out in the open. They turn green when watered so they have chlorophyll and do photosynthesize.

Your Catt roots turn green? Mine are only green at the tips, and don't change when wetted.
Mine shun the light like crazy.
"fill the entire clear pot and come thru holes and wander all over when left for more than a years or two."
Well, when they were in pots, mine seldom left the media, or if they did, they died back promptly. I don't know what my humidity is, but a friend from a dry area did comment that we had quite high humidity by his standards.
I don't like the trad pots because I don't see the point in cramping the roots. When they do go out thru such holes when I buy an orchid, I always curse because I know those roots are screwed when I repot in something bigger.

Here is one I watered earlier today. I just grabbed one easy to reach, and to be fair, this is an extreme example of roots all over. I Pad picture won't orient itself correctly. But the tag shows my pot date of Mar, 2015 when I got it bare root from Ching Hua and almost rootless. The roots in the pot are still wet and therefore green. They will turn white, just like a Phal root when they are dry.
Here is a better example. I am just re-potting this one and quickly sprayed the roots at the sink after getting it out of its clear pot. This had been potted in June 2015 and obviously needs a new pot. All the roots after spraying are very green,.

If you have questions about clear pots log in to our website, Chula Orchids - Clear Plastic Orchid Pots, Decorative Plant Clips, and more!, and click the "Testimony" link under the "Other Features" menu on the left hand side of any page. It has been updated with information concerning the benefits of clear plastic orchid pots.
You'll also see a nice article I wrote if you follow the Orchids 101 link.
Make sure to check out the GREAT DEALS we have on clear plastic orchid pots on the clear plastic orchid pot page itself.
I also started a page called "Question and Answers" where I will keep my responses to some of the more interesting or frequently asked questions I come across, including some I find here.

FYI: I edited the above post to reflect where that information is now located on our website.

Chula is definitely "the place" for clear pots.
All of the clear pots I resold for years came from Harry! (And you all know me...I won't sell crap. Only quality stuff.)

Just for the record, my Catt roots also turn green when watered.
Kristen, have you thought of getting clear plastic drink cups and adding your own holes ? I use a hot screwdriver to make holes, others use soldering irons or drills. Lots of ways to make holes.

I'm new, but I bought clear plastic pots with slots from Amazon for way less than they were from Repotme.
I also burned holes into some other clear plastic things from the dollar store and into a plastic dessert cup from Aldi, after we ate the dessert and put the cup through the dishwasher, using my husband's old soldering iron.
The dessert cup is taller than the other pots but narrower compared to height and has a nice foot to hold for balance, which also keeps the holes in the bottom nicely off the tray.
So, if you can find clear containers and a soldering iron or heat up a nail, you can make your own.
