The new, old, house is heated in part by wood. This does make the air dry however we've only been here a week. The prior living environment had a more steady heat source.
I had presumed that the rot in the roots was caused by too much moisture. Seems I may have been wrong in this regard.
Thank you very much for your advice and wisdom.
edit to add that I've not located the thermometer/hydrometer device so these data are not available.
