LIGHT: 1200-2300 fc. These plants will grow and bloom under various lighting conditions, but the leaves appear at their best when grown in more shade than is acceptable by most of the other species in the genus. Strong air movement should be provided at all times.
TEMPERATURES: Summer days average 76-77F (25C), and nights average 67-69F (20-21C), with a diurnal range of 8-9F (4-5C). Because of the range in habitat elevation, these plants should adapt to conditions 8-10F (4-6C) warmer than indicated in the table.
HUMIDITY: 90-95% from late spring to early autumn, dropping to 75-80% from late autumn through early spring. WATER: Rainfall is very heavy from late spring into autumn. Amounts then decrease rapidly into a 4-5 month winter dry season. Cultivated plants should be kept moist while actively growing, but the medium should not be allowed to become soggy and stale. Water should be reduced in autumn, but plants should not be allowed to dry out completely. Visitors to the habitat report that because of the heavy summer rains and the frequent heavy dews, fog and mist, in winter, the habitat never really dries out, even in the dry season.
FERTILIZER: Applications are usually mixed at 1/10-1/4 recommended strength. A balanced or high nitrogen fertilizer is normally applied weekly to biweekly during periods of active growth. Growers frequently switch to a fertilizer higher in phosphates during late summer and autumn to promote better blooming the next season and to allow the new growths to harden before winter. Normal care should be taken to prevent salt buildup in the pot.
REST PERIOD: Winter days average 58-60F (14-16C), and nights average 46-48F (8-9C), with a diurnal range of 12F (7C). Although rainfall is low in winter, additional moisture is generally available from heavy dew, fog and mist. Water should be reduced for cultivated plants in winter. Plants should be allowed to become somewhat dry between waterings but should never dry out completely. Growers report that a cool, dry rest for about 2 months in late autumn is necessary for these plants to flower properly. Fertilizer should be eliminated until heavier watering is resumed in spring.
GROWING MEDIA: Any open, well-drained medium that remains moist but not soggy may be used. Growers report that these plants will grow well in most any potting mix as long as there is sufficient drainage and good air flow. Plants should be repotted before the medium breaks down and becomes sour. Repotting is normally done in spring, immediately after flowering.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES: In nature, plants bloom in winter and early spring.
