Container size

I was told that some of the containers that came with the orchids that I inherited are too large for the orchid (pic included).

How do you determine proper container/pot size for a given orchid?

Should I repot into a different container for any of these? Although not shown, each had almost no roots when I received them. They are all having some roots emerge now thanks in part at least to maintaining a good temperature and using Kelpak, but the roots are quite small.

The challenge presented by a too-large container is a tendency to stay too wet. In your case, that's at least partly mitigated by the fact the the medium is very open and airy. If the plants are rooting, you don't have to repot if you can create a watering regiment that lets the plants be damp but not soggy. Observation is your superpower.

In an ideal situation a sympodial orchid (one that grows along a rhizome, such as Cattleya or Oncidum) has room for about 2 years' growth. For a monopodial plant such as a Phalaenopsis, the pot should just accommodate the roots. If the root system is small, the pot can be quite small. Here, it's a balancing act... if it was just recently potted and the roots are starting to grow, maybe best to not disturb it for a while. But you do want to make sure that it's not staying too wet.

It depends on your conditions, your care, the orchid, the type of pot and your medium what size pot you should choose. When growing orchids, it is definitely not a 'one size fits all' deal. I just had to put my little Phal schilleriana into a much larger pot as it is growing very quickly and the roots really need the room. I am using the same type of plastic pot you are and they seem to do a nice job letting the air circulate around the roots.
