I'm the proud momma of a new keiki

Today as I was watering my flowers I noticed my very first keiki!

It is on my phal dendrobium 'burana' and I think that is so cool!

It is still flowering, and the plant seems really healthy. I heard that keikis only come about when the plant is in distress is that true?

Whichever way, I'm so excited about it!!!

Congratulations! It's lovely! I am a relative newbie, but I can't corroborate the theory that keikis only grow on distressed plants. My one keiki came from a phal that is frighteningly robust - in less than ideal conditions, it sports gorgeous glossy leaves, roots that you suspect are planning on strangling you, and bi-annual prolific double-spike blooms. Maybe happy plants make babies too?

Keikis don't only grow on distressed phal .. there are certain species that freely produce keikis such as equestris, fasciata and lueddemanniana.
"Phalaenopsis equestris produces "keikis" easily and the ramified stalks give easily flowers several years in continuation." as per Phalaenopsis equestris anglais
and in the Complete Guide to Orchids
By Meredith Books, Ortho Books, American Orchid Society page 183, it states "Phal. equestris is one of the easiest species to grow successfully. Keikis grow at the end of flourescences after flowering in completed for the summer."
With Phal fasciata - "As with Phal equestris, this species produces keikis on the older florescences. When left intact, they too will flower, producing a spectacular display. " (same book, same page)
With Phal lueddemanniana - "It readily produces keikis on it's long inflorescences. These bloom, usually each spring, year after year. " (Same book, Same page)

Congrats! Oh I dont know when my phal will produce keikis.. it's still very small..and I'm struggling to make it grows some roots :P
