Keikis don't
only grow on distressed phal .. there are certain species that freely produce keikis such as equestris, fasciata and lueddemanniana.
"Phalaenopsis equestris produces "keikis" easily and the ramified stalks give easily flowers several years in continuation." as per

Complete Guide to Orchids
By Meredith Books, Ortho Books, American Orchid Society page 183, it states "Phal. equestris is one of the easiest species to grow successfully. Keikis grow at the end of flourescences after flowering in completed for the summer."
With Phal fasciata - "As with Phal equestris, this species produces keikis on the older florescences. When left intact, they too will flower, producing a spectacular display. " (same book, same page)
With Phal lueddemanniana - "It readily produces keikis on it's long inflorescences. These bloom, usually each spring, year after year. " (Same book, Same page)
