I also have superthrive on hand. Don't know if it might help. I always thought it was similar to kln.

The spike started yellowing on mine as well, but stopped right above the keiki. Normally if the keiki is still pumping nutrients from the mother plant, it should stay green starting at the keiki and below. Keep an eye on it just in case, you might have to cut it off if the yellowing progresses down the entire stem.
There are good threads about keikis and coconut milk and other. I'll try to find them, other wise I'm sure Dorothy can find the info for you quicker than it takes to say 'keiki'!!

Default Keikis

This is a really cool discussion! I am a newbie with only 3 orchids. Your explanations of keikis is very informative. I am wondering whether brassias grow these as well, and if so what they look like? My only brassia has one part with a side growth and small rootlike hairs (don't know the proper terms, obviously). Would a photo be helpful?

Just as a an update, my keiki now has two fairly long roots and is still doing fine on the mother plant. Everything above the keiki on the spike died. After my keiki grew 4 leaves, another keiki started below it and is growing pretty rapidly. It's just amazing to me because the mother plant has no leaves at all and hasn't had any leaves for a while. It's just a brown stub, but the keiki's keep growing. I'll post a picture whenever i get time.

I don't have any experience with keikis, but I do have a phal. The die-back shouldn't reach the keiki until it can support itself (based on how phal spikes stay green at or above a point that will grow into another bloom spike if left on the plant), but it won't hurt to speed up the process.
