Paphiopidelum fairrieanum care (temps)

I have just received my first Paph species seedlings. According to IOSPE this is a cool to cold growing species, but what does this mean in terms of temps? If I keep it in the normal house temps (66/70) will that be in the range? Is there more specific information on native temps?

Well, I'm in the ballpark for the summer temps, but I don't have a way to lower temps any further. That is, unless I put it outside or in the garage. I'd really rather not. Think it'll do ok with the same temps year round?

I keep mine in my house March - October and out in my winter greenhouse (minimum 45 degrees) in the winter, along with all my other orchids that need a dry cool rest. The Baker sheet specifies a cool/dry winter rest.

If you aren't providing the cooldown I would keep watering as normal. I actually bloomed this in my intermediate-warm room (65-85f) and kept it alive for a couple years. It was much happier when I moved it to my living room (normal home temps 68-74f) during Mar-Oct and to the garage in winter.

Thanks. Living room is where it is now with similar temps. I'll just keep an eye on it. Is/was it in SH?

I experimented with semi hydro years ago and have a few plants still in leca, but no paphs. I think farianum would like semi hydro for the evaporative cooling effect. Maybe put it close to a north facing window in winter in order to get it a little cooler from the ambient cold that comes off of windows. good luck!

I live up in Ontario and my fairranium spends its winter in my garage thats always 10 degrees Celcius in an east window and seems to love it. It summers outside in bright shade and grew lots.

I'm getting a few farrianum crosses but not species. I have the same issue as yours.

I have not had success with this species, although it has been a long time since I tried. Paph Paradise however has a couple tips that I filed away for the future. Do not ever let it dry out, and do not divide it. They are well known for their paphs so I plan to follow that advice when I eventually get another.
