I'm glad the cold water quashed it from a Cat. 4 to 1, but Hurricane Florence was a 1 when it came into NC, and it flooded the hell out of the area. Almost 200 cars were lost on Oak Island alone, which constituted about 5% of the households.

The amount of rain dropped was equivalent of 12" over every square of the state.

I'm thinking of all of you in the path of this storm and sending good wishes that you will remain safe and that property damage will be minimal.

Thankfully, CA geography reduces the land area prone to flooding (and increases the land area prone to landslides )compared to NC and almost all of the east coast.

Unfortunately, human development out here happened in the worst places and in the worst ways as it relates to rainfall and our watersheds, so the areas that do flood, flood absolutely horrendously.

My parents in Carmel Valley lost power. We still have power in Fallbrook for now.

FYI: if you have solar on your house, don’t forget to shut off your system if you lose power. Electrifying a downed grid can kill people working on lines.

As I was reading this, a category 5 earthquake struck! Definitely quite interesting places for humans to settle

Missed that one... you're a lot closer to Ojai (Santa Barbara area) than I am. And I think fairly far up in a tall building, so guess you got a little rock-and-roll. Me? still waiting for that wind. (coastal Orange County) Looks like Hillary is tracking a bit to the east. At my house, just wet and humid. (Happy orchids)

The string of profanities I want to use because the “earthquake weather” myth has now been confirmed in the minds of believers, is long. Sigh.

lots of rain but no big wind! It's the perfect weather to wash all of my mounted orchids.

Wind just started at my place. We're not done yet. But the orchids got a lovely long bath all day.
