Phal Philippinensis - roots drying up
Hello!
I have Phal Philippinensis with roots keep on drying up (becomes dry and yellow) and I'm not quite sure what to do about it..
I read that Phal Philippinensis likes to be bone dry between watering and doesn't like to be wet for too long, so that's what I've been trying to do, it's wet for about 2-3 days after watering and I usually water every 5 days, 4 if the weather is hot.
Can someone tell me why it's losing roots like this? and also one of its leaves is becoming very droopy and soft as well..
Thank you!!

Pictures of what you are describing would help. Can you attach a few?

Pictures would definitely help. But I would question the "bone dry" advice. In its habitat, it's very humid. So even if it isn't wet, there is exposure to moisture. If it is potted in large bark (with lots of air, not a lot of moisture retention) you can water frequently, giving the roots the "humid air" that they want, without it staying wet. (I learned the hard way... my "dry" is a lot drier than tropical "dry")

I have the same species and I don’t give it any significant special treatment compared to my other phals. They all get watered when they’re drying/dry-ish, but I don’t ever intentionally let any of them get bone dry. I try to avoid that.

Thanks! The plant just got knocked out of its bark earlier so here are some photos of the roots and the droopy leaf. I cut most of the dried up roots, but they just went from green to dried yellow in a couple weeks..
The leaf is also very thin, soft and droopy.. was a little soft about 3 weeks ago but definitely in better condition then

It needs some TLC for awhile, but it is very salvageable. Don’t get too hung up on the species-specific stuff when you’re trying to rehab a phal. Keep it damp, not soggy, warm, and humid, and it will do fine with enough time.

Got it! I was just worried that it might die and wasn’t sure what to do about it thanks for the comments!

If it is in bark in a small pot, you can water every day, or at least every other day, especially in summer. All of my phals have an outer cup and I give them a short soak and drain them. Warmth and humidity help too if you can provide it.
I just got a phillipineses, but I haven’t had it long enough to determine if it needs anything in particular. It’s with the other small phals that get soaked and drained every other day, seems happy so far!

Thanks! I’ll start watering it more often, it does get pretty dry in the summer. I really like its leaves, hopefully it’ll start growing some roots soon!

soak it in water overnight then repot it in phalaenopsis orchid mix. Do not think that your plant needs a 'Philippine environment'....it was grown in a lab and needs just that kind of environment. You are in zone 10a and its summer so the humidity in your area is just fine. Water every other day and in colder months weekly....you do not have the right environment for growing orchids in a bark....growing in a bark needs high humidity and morning dew....
