Need help with indoor orchid
Exclamation Need help with indoor orchid

Hello.
I'm new to this forum and also not an orchid expert.
I just bought this nice orchid plant online and following my friends' advice, I'm keeping it in the bathroom for the humidity.
Within a week the new flower buds have started drying out, the existing flowers are also drying out.
What should i do?

Your Phalaenopsis (also nicknamed Phal or Moth Orchid) is suffering from what we call "bud blast." Many times an orchid that has partially unopened buds on it will do this when moved from one location to another. Like from the store to your house. The difference in temperature, humidity, etc, from one place to another can cause it.

It can even happen, for example, moving it from a second floor bathroom to your dining room table. It won't hurt the plant. It just won't have quite as many blooms this time. If I have a Phal in my orchid growing space that I want to use in a display in another area of the house, I either move it far in advance of the buds setting on, or wait until all buds have opened.

Welcome to Orchid Board, and that's a really pretty plant.

By the flag on your post it looks like you are in Britain or GB. You would not have to worry much about having adequate humidity in your house if this is the case.

Most bathrooms do not have enough light to grow most plants Without additional light, like a grow light, the farther from a window you are, the less likely that photosynthesis is happening even for a low light plant. Although they are low light, their low light is still about 1000 FC, and inside rooms can often be only 500 fc or less. Also if it was in bloom when it travelled it could be bud blast. Having it too near to an indoor heater or even a cold draft will also cause the buds to blast.

Another thing to think about is that orchids only bloom for some period during the year, and this may be getting close to the end of its bloom cycle. Phals are winter bloomers-- during the other part of the year they are just green leaf plants. Then they begin a new spike and put out flowers again. You have a lovely phal. I have never seen one with so many flowers.

I hope you stick around and learn more about keeping phalaenopsis an other orchids.

Thanks so much 😊

I'm so relieved. I'll just leave it alone and hopefully it's going to be ok.

I had this problem and there were 3 different reasons. 1st the store, like a grocery store, let the plants get to cold. Second the plant dried out and the roots look silvery too long. 3rd the sun got the buds too hot. For me humidity has never been a problem with these plants. Put it in a sunny spot that gets not too hot but warm. Lift the pot out and look through it. If the roots look dried or silvery water. If you leave a little water at the bottom of the pot half inch the plant will not dry out if you forget: vacation this is helpful. Also people say the leaves should be light green always this is not true. Give it the most light you can without burning the leaves or making them too yellow. Also it is important to give the plant time to flower. Sometimes not giving it attention is the best: you might get crazy staring at it everyday!!! good luck
