While obviously there are limits of what one can get away with, one really can get away with a lot of "good enough". Some little things (like polycarbonate hard cover to avoid the wet part of "cold and wet" or aluminet shade cloth that can lower temps a few degrees in summer and raise them a few degrees in winter) can help. Putting marginal things next to a block wall or house that absorbs heat on winter days and radiates it at night can be useful. Be bold, push the envelope a bit... coming into spring, it's the time to do it - the plants can acclimate over the seasons, by next winter they will be a lot tougher than they are after being pampered. You won't win them all, but speaking as a "What can I get away with ?" grower, you can get away with a lot.
