I've had this plant for a couple of years but have been unsuccessful getting it to bloom. I moved it a south facing window in a cold cellar. This seems to have done the trick! It has developed small spikes on at least 4 pseudobulbs.

So the question is: when can I move this to the warmer living room so I can actually enjoy the flowers? Is moving it now a good idea or ought I wait a bit longer?

By the way, I believe this to be the nominate subspecies and not the commonly grown "giganteum".

Oh cool! Cant wait to see the flowers!

I would just let it open flowers in the window and then move it. In my experience open flowers are mich less likely to drop when you change conditions.

Dont the flowers only last a day or two? That might throw a wrench in things...

Congrats on getting it to spike! I agree, I would leave it where it is. A quick change in conditions may lead to bud drop. Once it opens, you could probably move it to a better viewing location.

Flowers aren't particularly long lasting under the best of circumstances. I'd put it where you can enjoy it. The "cool" that inspired it to bloom has done its job, and when it drops the flowers you can put it back in its grow space. This species can bloom multiple times from the same canes, and 2 or 3 times a year. No need to pamper it.

Thanks Roberta! Following your guidance on another thread is what brought this plant to spike. Your patient guidance for neophyte orchid growers like me is much appreciated!

This is a very nice Den. and I've grown mine for ~3yrs.in a south window under grow lights. It's in a hanging basket with 8" blooming spikes and 2" new ones growing. I have shades in the window for those too hot conditions but night temps are ~63deg. and daytime is ~70. It's bloomed each yr from old previous spikes and blooms last 3-4 days(for my conditions). Have never moved it and I'm happy!
