What Have I Just Done? Oh Dear....
Default What Have I Just Done? Oh Dear....

I needed some new clear pots, so I ordered some.

Then I realized I would need some new opaque outer pots so I went to Hausermann's website to order some because they're cheaper there. Somehow, between picking out the pots and paying for them, I ended up with some orchids hopping into my basket.

I got one of the newsletters from Seattle Orchid and accidentally opened it instead of just deleting it.... And a Cattleya caught my eye.... so I went and ordered one, but ended up with another orchid in my basket...

Then I found a new orchid vendor up in the CDA area about 2 hours from me (she's online only at the moment). I just wanted to get a look at what kind of stuff she has, but I spotted an orchid that I lost last year and realized that I could get a replacement. So I ordered it, and a couple more orchids hopped into my cart...

Now everything has arrived, and I've realized that I did something unintentional... I have added to my collection:

- Aliceara Hilo Ablaze 'Hilo Gold' HCC/AOS (2 years from BS)

- Den. antennatum (the replacement, with 2 spikes coming)

- Den. Cherry Dance (flower spike was broken on arrival but there are 2 flowers left)

- Colmanara Wildcat 'Golden Red Star' (2 years from BS)

- Den. hekouense (which you'll see I've mounted here)

- Den. Kaila Quintal (in bloom with several more spikes coming)

- Oncostele Wildcat 'Yellow King' (2 years from BS)

- RLC Sebastian Pete 'Volcano Queen' (established seedling with 2 growths growing)

- Den. tangerinum (1-2 years from BS)

- Onc. Twinkle 'Fragrance Fantasy' Yellow (in bloom with 2 growths growing)

- Den. unicum giant form (Blooming Size - There is a problem with this one, and the post is here)

....

....

My collection has just gone from 26 to 37.....

How does that even happen?

I have not thoroughly analyzed the root of the issue, but it happens to all of us.

It’s worse if you can actually go to a nursery and select plants directly.

I believe the best recommendation is to turn your computer off, and set it on fire. That should prevent a recurrence of this serious issue.
Please note that due the economics of things, I usually only add 3 plants at a time. Your illness is obviously more concerning than mine.

There comes a point when the addiction sets in without you even notice it.

Yes, you are displaying signs of serious ongoing orchid addiction, with an acute episode happening recently. You will get no help here! We are all enablers. The nice thing is that all of your new plants look very healthy. Just try not to think of the fact that when most of them grow up, they will be a lot larger.

Speaking from personal experience, the only way to avoid acquisition of new orchids is to have absolutely no space for even one more plant. So count yourself lucky!

I've always wanted an antenatum. There are no bad Wildcats = Nice going all around!

Nice additions! I have Cherry dance, and it has a lovely fragrance. Just as soon as it gets warm enough, orchids are going to start arriving here…

Whoa, no hope here And you have stepped into a den of enablers.

I did respond to your post about the Den unicum... actually I'm also surprised that the Den hekouense has leaves... so don't panic if it loses them. Plants were probably grown under tropical conditions where normally-deciduous Dens keep their leaves, but no worries if they don't. They bloom on bare canes. Both species are native to Himalaya foothills where they get a winter chill as well as being drier and brighter in winter when the cloud cover is much less. Den hekouense from south-central China (Yunnan), Den unicum from highlands of northern Laos, Thailand, Vietnam

It happens more often when you have some spare cash. Spare 2 dollars? Good excuse to order 60 dollars worth of plants
