Default Resistance is Futile

I got to a ridiculous point about ten years back, then SWORE I wouldn't go over the 100 plants number. Then I decided a house plant didn't count. Then I inched up toward 150 again and gave myself a stern talking to, and backed down to under 100 (houseplants still don't count now).

As Mountaineer opines, living in a climate with winters does help the resistance level. Until you run out of room and start thinking of greenhouses or doing away with a bedroom and expanding. (I chose the latter).

Just know that however many plants you end up with, we'll be here to support you in getting a few more.

I'm already working on converting a heavy duty shelving unit into an indoor greenhouse. I'll be posting about it here as I work on it, but I wanted a place with higher humidity for most of my plants. This is not 'additional' space as most of my orchids are already on the shelf. I'm just finishing it off.

Then I'll get the table next to the window back.

Yeah, that's how it starts. Then you find you have an extra closet that could be adapted for other purposes. Then your bathtub looks like it's free and available space, I mean it's hardly ever used, 23 hours of the day, it's empty.

Cool

I do love that poem, Roberta. I might need to print it!

The lights are off for the day, but this is the shelving unit I'm converting. Most of my plants are on it, and the others will go in it once it's done. We are going to close it in with plexiglass and line the back with polypropylene pegboard so it's modular.

I'm essentially building a scaled-up version of this that I saw on YouTube. I have a cabinet that will go to the left to hold the humidifier and thermostats, etc. We should have the plexiglass/pegboard next week so we can start working out the assembly. I will document the process here and maybe even film it for future reference.

I want my orchids to be readily visible, but I will be limiting myself to this one cabinet for the next several years. Once I finish my dual degrees in cybersecurity and software engineering and get some work experience, I plan to find a job in South Korea. Moving one of these massive terrariums and its plants will be bad enough.

Once I'm settled in, however, I wouldn't mind having a second cabinet set up for cooler/shadier types.

If you ordered from who I think you did in CDA, I bought a Ascf. Cherry Blossom from her. Such a nice plant and a great buying experience. Completely recommend! If I didn't run out of room (see options for a cure above), I'd have ordered more.

A lovely haul. Nice!

Spare cash + room for more plants + working internet connection + warmer weather (for shipping) = recipe for getting more orchids.

It's easy. I got one of those "Surprise boxes" for 40$ or something like that. One plant was a dendrobium Atroviolacium v compactum. I totally fell in love. It is tough, long lasting and has a huge amount of flowers with a weird vanilla type smell. Right now it is on its second blooming in my care. I got totally off track and now I look for Atroviolacium crosses. They all do look kind of similar, small white to green, spotted flowers with a lip with purple stripes. I totally love those flowers! (It is like collecting only bifoliate Cattleyas with brown spotted leaves and a purple lip). Kind of a weird type of collection.
