Default Outdoor Orchids in SFV

I'm not new to orchids, but have always grown them indoors under lights. I moved from the East Coast to the San Fernando Valley in California and find myself with a small, Eastern facing patio. The patio is completely open to the sky but due to the buildings on either side and a large tree only a small portion gets direct sun.

I'd like to grow some orchids outside but have no idea where to start. I am completely out of room indoors so would need something that can stay outside year round. I believe I am in zone 9a. I'd love suggestions, especially if you live in the area and have success with a particular orchid. Thank you!

Laelia anceps!

With some shading, Sarcochilus.

Also, check out Orchid Society of Southern California They meet in Burbank. You'll meet lots of people who grow outside in your neighborhood.

My website shows what I grow outside, but I'm coastal and and can get away with more types - you get a bit colder, and a lot hotter than I do, But for sure, Cymbidiums, Aussie Dendrobium, and Laelia anceps will work for you you. Probably Cattleya (Laelia) purpurata too.

beside what everyone have said, I saw many Sobralias at Andy's but I'm not sure if it can work with the inland heat of LA.
