cymbidium orchid black wet spots
Default cymbidium orchid black wet spots

Hi everyone, 2 weeks ago got a new cymbidium orchid, and spotted some black wet sticky spots, and some black spots that look rotted.
need help to identify why it happens.
checked for pests with eyes and magnifier, cant find nothing.

conditions: water every 7 days (checking roots and soil touch) , fertilizing with orchid fertilizer 30% dosage (starting low with a new plant always), in a very light room, a little bit of early morning direct sun.

Thanks

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

I try never to let Cymbidiums dry completely. In each photo showing the medium it is very dry. I think once every 7 days is not enough water. Being too dry can cause black spots.

What are your temperatures?

The wet sticky liquid behind the flowers is normal - it's "sugar water" from the plant, some people call it "happy sap". I agree with ES, too dry - my Cyms get watered about every 2 days. They are quite wet all the time. But they also get air around the roots, because the bark medium has lots of air space. In the late winter or early spring, after it is done blooming, a repot into fresh medium would be helpful. It looks like a slightly larger pot is needed too - but don't overdo it. Just allow for about 2 years' growth. Cyms bloom best when they are ready to break the pot.

Thanks for the answer, I’ll think I’ll try to esker more often.
Temperature is around 18-22C day/night.

Thank for answering Roberta!
My plan is to repot it in the early spring in a slightly larger pot.
I’ll try to water more often.

It would not mind in the least going much cooler every evening, even down to just above 0C. The more winter light the better, however.
