What to pot a LARGE bulbophyllum in?
Default What to pot a LARGE bulbophyllum in?

Got my Ecuagenera order in today, and oh my gosh the Bulbophyllum longissimum I got is HYUUUUGE. Seriously. I usually use net pots with some sort of mixture of bark/sphagnum/perlite which has been really well. But this guy is a monster and no way did I have any pots big enough for him. Eventually put him in a salad colander with a thin layer of bark and moss and he barely fit. Got any suggestions? I'll be growing this guy indoors under lights. Mounted is not an option for me due to dry conditions and my work schedule.

there's a computer mouse under there for scale. Thinking of calling him "Long Salad"!

Go to the dollar and a quarter store and find a low, wide plastic bowl that fits it with a couple of inches of space all around. Drill a few holes here and there.

You can also put it in a tray with sphag and let it ramble. Some examples in Bill Thom's talk that is referenced elsewhere on the forum... if you can't find the link (San Francisco Orchid Society YouTube channel) I'll dig it up again and post it.

Default Long Salad update!

so I eventually put it into a long shallow pot with a water catching tray underneath. Put some microfiber strips to help the water wick up from the tray. Potted it up with a mix of small bark and NZ sphagnum moss. Had lots of new growth and IT'S BLOOMING!!!!!
