Yellow spots on macodes petola Female
Default Yellow spots on macodes petola

Help please! I bought this beautiful macodes petola but it has now developed some very ugly spots on 2 leaves. I want to cry! I kept it inside the house so it would not be in too much humidity outside and made sure not to water the leaves and still I am getting these spots on it. What should I do? Is there anything I should spray it with? Thank you!

It may be adjusting to its new conditions by shedding older leaves. Greenhouse grown plants get ideal conditions and can support more leaves than plants grown in a home environment. My regular jewel orchid drops the lower leaves on each stem regularly. They keep a nice rosette of leaves, a few more right below it, but the lower ones further back on the stem eventually dry up. Watch it, but I wouldn’t be treating for anything.

What are the indoor high/low temperatures? How much light is it getting? How have you been determining when to water it?

These are very low light plants, preferring deep shade. Could that be sunburn? High humidity is good for them. I don't know their upper temperature tolerance but 37C / 99 F is not too hot.

I doubt that it is simply adjusting because when they shed leaves due to this reason they usually drop the bottom ones and the leaves become yellowish more uniformly rather than with such ugly spots.

I also don’t think that it is sunburn because it is under a grow light and I would expect in this case the leaf that was closest to the light, so the highest, to suffer sunburn, but again, these leaves that are affected are in the middle of the plant. Also, I have another one, same species, sitting right next to it in the exact same conditions and that one is fine, so I think it’s some sort of infection since it is only affecting this plant and not its sister.

Temps in the house are about 27 C / 80 F and humidity about 45-50%. I will try to take it outside but I am afraid this is some bacterial thing and if I take it into 32 C / 90 F and +80% humidity it will only make it worse. I really love it and I don’t want to kill it. Especially since the sister plant is promised to a friend. Though happy at least that one is doing ok.
