That also happens when the end of the spike is spent - those new side spikes off the old spike can extend blooming, even for years. Yup, that's been my experience too. Mine grew a new leaf and sent up a new stem only for some insect to chew it off a few inches above the base. A month later now and it's growing a new shoot from the node below where it got chewed off.
