Default is this the right time to repot this cattleya?

hi all!
i lost my first cattleya to repotting. now i have gotten this cattleya, which i have refrained from repotting due to sheer fear. BUT now the newest growths have put out some new roots tips. is this the right time to repot????

i LOATHE this media, which is just onesingle thick dense degenerating mushy piece of coconut, so i really want to get it out of the pot.
thanks a lot

Default LOOK WHAT I FOUND WHEN I UNPOTTED THIS CATTLEYA

when i pulled all the orchid out, NOT ONE ROOT WAS ALIVE. all dead. all there was left were were strands of death.

what happens is when they start out in the coconut slab, everything is fine. but eventually, the top layer of the coconut degenerates, while the insides stay firm, but turn spongy and acidic, strangling the roots, and killing them. only the top parts stay alive, slowly starving the orchid.

hence i believe no one should use coconut slabs, but instead use coconut chips.

For Cattleyas, any form of coconut will tend to hold too much water. Catts need to dry out between waterings and want lots of air around their roots. Large bark, or an inorganic medium, would be much better. For me, Catts do better in baskets than in pots because of faster drying and more air.
