Phalaenopsis trouble on the leaf
Default Phalaenopsis trouble on the leaf

Hello,
When I noticed the signs of a probable sunburn or fertilizer burn on the tip of my orchid leaf I took it out of its pot, cut and cleaned some rotten roots, wiped the leaves clean and spread some olive oil on top of the leaves. I decided to monitor the situation for a time so I didn't repot the orchid immediately. Instead I put the remaining orchid roots in water in open air during daytime and take them out of the water during nights to promote new root growth because there are only a few roots left healthy. For a few days the trouble on the leaf seemed stabilised, it didn't seem to proceed. I even was surprised and delighted to see that a new leaf formation had begun. However, I just noticed that there is probably a more serious problem on the leaf than I dared to hope for. So what could be wrong with my orchid? Should I cut the troubled leaf to save my orchid?

How much light is it currently getting? What are the day/night temps where the orchid is kept?

I live on the Black Sea coast and the temperatures vary from 17 to 30 degrees Celsius. The weather has been nice and sunny for the last 10 days I have kept the orchid in the balcony in open air. I have tried to avoid keeping it under direct sunlight. I keep it in open air during the daytime and take it indoors for the nights. So I keep it in open air and under daylight for about 12 hours every day.

Looks like sunburn to me too. Phals are low-light plants, and just a few minutes of direct sun can burn leaves. Olive oil would just make things worse. It can concentrate sunlight. and possibly clog pores in the leaves, especially if put on the underside.

Welcome to the Orchid Board.

I agree - sunburn. It is best if Phalaenopsis never have sun shining on their leaves.

Your plant looks healthy enough to survive and grow well. I suggest you pot it into a medium of your choice. Bark, LECA clay balls and sphagnum moss all work well for Phals, but watering will be different.

Read through a few pages of a thread here on growing Phals. From the left yellow menu choose Forums, then Beginners. Near the top look for the sticky thread The Phal. abuse stops here.

Thank you all for your replies,
I got worried because the troubled part on the leaf began to expand and look different. It seems I wasn't so successful in trying to avoid sun exposure. I will repot my orchid and let the troubled leaf be as it is. And I will do more research on what to avoid not to hurt my orchid more.
