hmmm, well, it's probly just my uninformed opinion, but those roots in the op look mostly fine to me. i probly wouldn't think anything of em and just have potted it up!

I’m not going to touch them anymore for now, until I repot. I will get some kelp though! I have heard it is good.
The plants actually look really good with the smelly old moss and dead stuff removed. They seem pretty healthy actually now that I look at them.
The moss was awful though.
