Dendrobium help
Default Dendrobium help

Hello!
I’m a newbie with Orchids. My husband gave me this Orchid which ended up being a Dedrobium.
The canes have looked dry and wrinkly since the day it was bought and repotted right away because the roots were dry like paper. I didn’t take a lot of it out because I was afraid to kill it. It had pretty flowers I believe called “bullshead flower” and It bloomed for a VERY long time

For watering I wait for the soil to dry before watering, and I keep a close eye on it but it never plumped up and now the leaves are turning yellowish. I did have it close to a window (not super close but it had morning light). I moved it away from there.

I’m not sure if I’m doing anything wrong, gosh I’m kind of new at this and I would hate to see it die.

Here are pictures of how it looks now and how it looked when it had flowers. Any help I would appreciate!

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

That is a nice gift! Fortunately this kind of Dendrobium is not hard to grow. In addition to bull's horns you might find it referred to as an "antelope" or "spatulata" Den. Those terms all refer to related Dendrobiums.

Yours is a small plant. Over time new stems will get longer and longer, with more and more flower spikes. The shorter stem is older.

This kind of Den. likes to be warm and moist all year. It also prefers a lot of light. Where do you live? People in Hawaii and Florida can grow them in the sun as landscape plants. They like most summers outdoors, but should come inside as fall cools. If you grow it inside give it as much light as you can. If you've had it far from a window move it gradually closer so it adapts to the higher light and doesn't sunburn.

The yellowing happens eventually to older leaves, then they fall off. They usually last several years. They also fall if the plant doesn't get enough water. I think you may have kept it a little too dry. The yellow leaf is on the older growth, but I would have expected it to stay green for another year or so. The bark you chose is good. I would expect to water that plant in that bark every 3-5 days, depending on the temperature. Let it get almost dry between waterings. You can tell how wet it is by lifting the plant and noticing the weight. If it's completely dry you can put it in a deep bowl in the sink and let it soak overnight to water. Drain then put back in its spot.

It will soon begin making new growth from the base. When that starts be sure not to let it dry completely, but don't keep it soggy wet. Start fertilizing when new growth begins. You can use any fertilizer with the three numbers like 20-20-20 or 13-3-15 with micronutrients. Mix a half to one teaspoon per gallon of water and fertilize once a week until fall, then go to once a month through the winter.

The next growth might be twice as tall as the one that just flowered, and it will probably have a lot more flowers.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! That was A LOT of help! I thought all needed to be more dry than Phalaenopsis. It sounds like this specific one needs more watering. Poor thing!
I did place it on bath last night. I live in Florida but I don’t have it outside, I have it inside and my house is on the 71 to 72 at all times.
I didn’t have it too close to the window and it was facing what we call here “the lanai area (pool area) which is covered, so it was not like it had pure heat in the morning. But as I mentioned prior, the pic with the flowers was when it was given to me and it looked super dry already. I think it was the watering what I was doing wrong!
I started with the general Phalaenopsis as gifts but this one threw me off since I’m starting with orchids.

Thank you soooo much for your help. I feel more confident with it now.

This one can go onto your lanai. It will be much happier in warm to hot temperatures than in your house. Plus that makes room for Oncidium orchids, which enjoy those kinds of house temperatures.

It will take lots of sun but you'll need to move it bit by bit. It's like a person going into the sun after a long winter indoors - they need to do it gradually.

Your Phals will also be happier in the warmer temperatures outside, but in full shade with no sun on their leaves.
