phalaenopsis petals leaning backwards?
Lightbulb phalaenopsis petals leaning backwards?

((OK, I'm going to call myself semi-novice. I know my way around plants in general, and I'm confident with the basic care and feeding of my rapidly expanding and thriving Phaelanopsis collection but this is above my head. ))

This little guy was bought as a blind-buy seedling and it just bloomed for the first time. And it...looks...windblown? The blooms are strong, it's not wilted and they're quite new, and the plant is healthy (aside from being quite young and very small) and pest free. Is it alright? Am I doing something wrong? Can I do something better? Or is it just kind of goofy? I'm sure it's some experimental hybrid. (No name, no tags, just a # scribbled on the side of the pot type of deal)

They seem to be getting more dramatically pointed backward with time. (Ie newest opened flower is flattest)

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

Orchids often but not always produce misshapen flowers the first or second flowering. Wait for the third flowering to see what it will look like.

Welcome to Orchidboard!

Another possibility is that sometimes Phal blooms start out that way before flattening out several days later. My Phal schilleriana is always so ugly when the blooms first open as they are similarily folded back. They then gradually flatten out and after about a week they are perfect.

Edit: Read too fast and missed your last line about it getting worse the longer they are open.

Other than it being a 'first time blooming' issue, it could be genetic (I have a Phal which always has the dorsal sepal folded back.) I recall reading somewhere that this used to be much more common in phals and was a results of poor breeding, buit luckily it is much less common nowadays.

Thanks for the additional input! As long as it's healthy I don't if it looks like it's in a hurry to get somewhere (lol). Knowing at worst it's a genetic quirk makes me happy
