I have a den. nobile hybrid and the care notes I've found in the Dendrobium Alliance suggest that you should not start fertilizing until the growing season. Now, I have been wintering this plant by leaving it in a cool area overnight and bringing it up to a warmer area by day, and watering when the cane starts to shrivel.

My temperatures right now are about 3-5C. at night and up to 10C during the day, and now I see I have little nubs along the side of the cane (there is only 1 real cane) that I think are flower buds.

Questions - Do you fertilize when the buds are growing, or do you wait until after the flowers fall? When is this thing supposed to grow (it has not grown at all since I got it last August). Should I stop putting it in a cool area at night now that I have buds?

They normally begin growing in spring, around or a little after flowering, and complete growth for the year in fall.

Wait to fertilize until there is new growth from the base of the plant and the buds are obvious. If you fertilize now the buds might transform into plantlets and you might not get flowers.

The flowers will last much longer if the plant is cool, so I suggest you keep doing what you are doing, and bring it into the living area to enjoy it from time to time once the flowers open. Don't let a plant in bud or flower go completely dry.

Follow the instructions you read and stop fertilizing in late summer, but don't reduce watering until new growth is mature.
