Vanilla Orchid questions
Default Vanilla Orchid questions

So, i have a couple vanilla orchids i would like some advice on. In zone 9A so it spends time both on our back patio and in a greenhouse. When in the greenhouse it gets 80* temps and 80% humidity and 6 hours of lights. The larger of the 2 just recently stopped growing from the main vine and split off about 5 nodes down into a new vine. This new vine is more yellow than the rest of it. Any idea what could be causing this? should i cut off the old section and try to get it to root again? Also the main pole is stuffed full of coco fiber. doesnt seem to be holding onto water very well and thinking about switching it all over to coco chips with peat moss and some compost to help. Would anything else be a better solution for this area? Also i would really like to push alot of growth this summer if possible. I just ordered some kelpmax and msu fert. anything else i should toss in? and finally, should i just drench
h the whole vine weekly or do daily foliar sprays with a very weak solution?

I don't grow vanilla, but I'm not seeing any yellow foliage in the pictures. New growth on plants can come in a paler color compared to older foliage. New foliage can also be a different color if it was grown in higher/lower light conditions. Unless it gets worse, I'd think the coloration on the new growth is normal.

It looks quite happy. It does look lighter green to me than is usual for this plant; it doesn't need as much light as it's getting. Has it been getting much magnesium?

Vanilla tends to sit there for months, then grow in a tremendous spurt. This usually happen during hot and humid weather, not now. Fertilize it well so it's ready to go.

You can use Epsom salts for magnesium. Cheaper than fertilizer. Mg replenishes very slowly, months not days.

Out of curiosity, do you know what species of Vanilla it is?

For what it's worth, I have a Vanilla planifolia growing on a wooden tomato cage indoors where the average RH is ~62%. That is lower than the greenhouse it came from, and most of the aerial roots it came with dried out over time, but the roots it grew here seem quite happy with the conditions. They have shown a tendency to stop growing with they hit something dry, but one surprised me by growing along the cage while another rejected a pot of moist bark it had grown down to. I mist them once or twice a day as I remember.
