Beginner orchids are truly just orchids that closely match your conditions and are not super-delicate. The better the match, the better any orchid you buy will do well. If you run air conditioning on the cool side during the summer and grow your orchids indoors, buy orchids that do not desire warmer summer temperatures unless you can put them out for the summer. The same with orchids that need higher lighting to bloom (My Cattleyas do much better if I put them outside for the summer).

Thank you so much for your wise words and encouragements! Yes, I have been following a grower that also lives in NYC and am learning what may work well. What's been great here is finding out names of orchids that I can look up. There are so many out there that I didn't even know where to start.
For now, I have 2 mini phalaenopsis that I hope to keep alive, and in a few months, I am thinking to add a few more different varieties that are available. Hausermann seems to have different orchids at different times, so I will see what will be around when I am ready to place the order! I will do more research in the meantime
