Beginner orchids are truly just orchids that closely match your conditions and are not super-delicate. The better the match, the better any orchid you buy will do well. If you run air conditioning on the cool side during the summer and grow your orchids indoors, buy orchids that do not desire warmer summer temperatures unless you can put them out for the summer. The same with orchids that need higher lighting to bloom (My Cattleyas do much better if I put them outside for the summer).

Many people will recommend orchids that are easy for them, in their conditions...just evaluate how they are growing these orchids before determining if they will also grow well in your conditions. Good luck and have fun!

Thank you so much for your wise words and encouragements! Yes, I have been following a grower that also lives in NYC and am learning what may work well. What's been great here is finding out names of orchids that I can look up. There are so many out there that I didn't even know where to start.

For now, I have 2 mini phalaenopsis that I hope to keep alive, and in a few months, I am thinking to add a few more different varieties that are available. Hausermann seems to have different orchids at different times, so I will see what will be around when I am ready to place the order! I will do more research in the meantime :)

Great that you have found a local person for advice There are some small, cute orchids that are bullet-proof for me, but my conditions are totally different. Also, if there is an orchid society that meets near you, a great source of local knowledge.
