2 day or 3 day are typical - plants travel by air.

Oh that's not bad! I'm used to plants coming in USPS and worrying it'll be stuck at post office on weekends. I'll look into what the shipping cost looks like

It is well worth it to pay for FedEx 2 or 3 day. Tracking is reliable and they deliver when they say are they are going to deliver. From Hawaii, it's typical 2 day to the west coast, probably 3 day to the east coast. But they tell yeu, and vendors plan accordingly (usually ship Monday or Tuesday so that the weekend doesn't get in the way) Even when USPS gets it right(no guarantee), tracking is awful if you need to plan on being available to receive the shipment.

I would wait until there is no danger of freezing. In the mean time read up on the plants you want.

H&R has their new list available now if you want to check it out. You can see if there is anything of interest to you and research those plants. There will be a new list in the summer. If you have any questions about the plants you can email or text Harry.
https://www.hrnurseries.com/download...List030222.pdf
The list is getting shorter as Harry and Roy prepare for their future retirement. I ordered a few plants but I'm not concerned about weather issues when shipping from Hawaii to So. CA.

What are your thoughts on Hwra. Lava Burst 'Puanani'? Is it a good one for beginner?

No. Get a bigger intergeneric Oncidium hybrid.

I just received a Hausermann's order--it is one of my favorite orchid vendors...the orchids always come healthy. Earlier this spring, I ordered a few Cattleyas from SVO.
Beginner orchids are truly just orchids that closely match your conditions and are not super-delicate. The better the match, the better any orchid you buy will do well. If you run air conditioning on the cool side during the summer and grow your orchids indoors, buy orchids that do not desire warmer summer temperatures unless you can put them out for the summer. The same with orchids that need higher lighting to bloom (My Cattleyas do much better if I put them outside for the summer).
Many people will recommend orchids that are easy for them, in their conditions...just evaluate how they are growing these orchids before determining if they will also grow well in your conditions. Good luck and have fun!
