Happy new year everyone,
I'm Brian; living in San Diego California about 8 miles to the Coastal, as a starter without knowledge about Orchids and how to provide a happy life to them. I currently have about 50 orchids which is all over the map. They were supper happy last year during spring and summer and fall, Brought them inside my house and they started to turn yellow on some leaves, I am sad but I am not a quitter, I am having a greenhouse ( 15'd x 20'w x 9'h ) under construction with twin wall polycarbonate panel, exhaust fans and fan on both end, heater and the air tubing and also will run water misting into the greenhouse, Would it be okay to have Pond liner on the ground with gravel and mulch on top of the liner to hold the moisture ? The green house locate in the full sun.
Thanks in advance for all your advises.
Brian

I used to live in the San Diego suburb Rancho Bernardo and in neighboring Escondido - both about 8-10 miles from the coast. There are other past and present California residents on the forum as well.

At any rate, I'm not sure what you're wanting from your post. If you want opinions on the yellowing we'll need to know what orchids are affected (some drop their leaves for the winter, most don't). If you want comments on your new greenhouse, I built a lean-to onto a covered porch mid summer last year.

It will be beneficial to have running water in the greenhouse. San Diego's dry Santa Ana winds are not present most of the year so regular misting may not be necessary. Perhaps you are thinking of an irrigation/watering arrangement.

-Keith

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

The two best things would be to join your local orchid society to ask lots of questions, and then to do a lot of reading.

You can look up orchid species at the Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia, orchidspecies.com .

You can read about other Orchid Board members' greenhouses here in the Greenhouse Gardening forum. From the left yellow menu choose Forums, then scroll down.

Welcome!

The San Diego County orchid society is very active, full of people who can help you. While they cancelled their January meeting due to COVID, they do still plan to meet in February in Balboa Park. But email contacts on the website in the meantime and express your interest. It is a terrific group.
