When does root bound become to much?
I have 12 orchids but 3 in particular are getting big and the root systems are taking over the pots. I just posted about the same ones flowering but im wondering when its time for a new home?

Phals look fine (provided that the mix is not deteriorating). Oncid is getting too large for it's pot, either up-pot or divide.

Great thanks. The Oncid seems to be growing “out” if that makes sense. Most roots are air so.. bigger pot? Im Thinking about putting its current pot into a bigger pot with corse mix and just try to support all the growth. Not replanting but giving a bigger growing space? Never tried cutting up an orchid before but never had something get this big so fast. It was in a tiny pot when i replanted most into those ceramics last winter. Definitely appreciate input.

Or break the ceramic with a hammer before it goes in to the bigger pot

You may find that if you give the plant a good soaking in a bucket before repotting, you will be able to work the roots out through their holes in the ceramic, thus saving the pot. This should work with the oncidium especially, with its fine roots.

Thats great advice, thank you. Do you think orchids are trying to “escape” ceramic or do they like it? Why im tempted to keep it as part of the mix. My plants in plastic vented pots are ok but the ceramics are happier.

They just like air... so "escaping" comes naturally to Phals - they are dominant epiphytes, would grow bare-root quite happily given enough moisture and humidity. Pots are a compromise in our (unnatural) conditions.

I get nervous with air roots too. In this case I have a new neo falcata with air roots dancing in the sky. Thinking about repotting but will ask for advice in repotting section first l

When you get nervous about air roots, stop stressing and read through the Root Porn thread.
