As long as they are healthy, no such thing as an ugly root! You can tell by looking at them that they have a different habitat than Phals and Catts and such... Paphs grow in leaf litter on the ground, or in pockets on cliffs, a rather terrestrial environment. So access to moisture is fairly constant. Phals and Catts and Vandas and most of the other orchids we grow are epiphytes, growing on tree branches or trunks where they have to grab water from the rain and then dry out somewhat when the rain stops, so they have that spongy velamin to hold on to transient water (and thick leaves and/or pseudobulbs to also store water).
