opininions on genera with similar culture to phals

hey all,

as the title suggests, i was hoping to get some opinions on which genera, in general (see what i did there?!), have culture and care requirements similar to phals.

our small collection is mostly phal dominated but as we move forward we would like to expand more into other types. we have a couple oncidiums, an epidendrum, a couple dendrobiums, a maxilaria, and a couple paphs and phrags. but only one or 2 of each of the others.

we like the oncidiums and they seem to grow well, the only problem is their size. we like the flowers of paphs and phrags, but haven’t had the best of luck with them so far.

so, if somebody wanted another genera with basically phal care, what would you suggest to a beginner? thanks for any opinions!

oh, and we loooove some of the flowers on rlc plants, so it would be great if that was one of the suggestions, hahahah! also, we know each genera and species have some members that require special care, so this is more of a general guidelines types question.....

Jewel orchids (Anoectochilus, Dossinia, Ludochilus, etc.)
Eurychone rothschildiana
come to mind.

Sounds like a nice (and diverse) collection.

ES's suggestion about the Jewels might be a good option. They don't have the most flamboyant flowers, but the foliage can be quite eye appealing.

In the Oncidium group you could look for some of the smaller sized ones, not all get super large!

Oncidium cheirophorum
Oncidium ornithorrhyncum ( now Onc. sotoanum) and the similar looking Twinkle hybrids. They do get bushy, but are significantly smaller than standard Onc types (like Sharry Baby!)

These are all easy, small, and not too demanding of light, at least for me:
Oncidium Twinkle (I have Pink Profusion but they are all small and tend to be fragrant)
Haraella rectrocalla (another good bloomer)
Schoenorchids (I have fragrans and another type)
Tuberlabium kotoense (most of the Tuberlabium)
Dendrobium auriculatum This one is fragrant, looks good out of bloom and blooms...all the time

hi all, thanks a ton for all the suggestions! we r gonna compile a list and see what is available when we r ready to buy another orchid or 3.

leafmite, you mentioned haraella retro, and i have one in my terrarium that is growing a spike. interestingly it has grown 2 buds to the point of just opening and both have fallen off. neither got past just breaking open. strange. but the spike is still growing so im hoping i might get to actually see a flower of my own on that one day soon. a nice plant tho....
