Possible Dendrobium Phalenopsis
Default Possible Dendrobium Phalenopsis

This orchid was a gift and is a NoID. I’m new at this and am wondering if it is a Dendrobium Phalenopsis hybrid. If not, any ideas what it might be?

It is a hybrid of the Dendrobium-phalaenopsis type. (And a beautiful one!) But has nothing to do with a Phalaenopsis... The Dendrobiums have Den. biggibum as a dominant ancestor, which has been called Den. phalaenopsis as well... someone thought that the flowers looked something like a Phal at some time, I guess. But Dens and Phals don't interbreed, too different.

Yes. These may have ancestors in the phalaenopsis, spathulata and/or latouria Sections. In general they prefer even warmth and watering all year. They tolerate somewhat less watering with somewhat lower temperatures in winter. With proper watering and temperatures they should not drop leaves until canes are at least 2-3 years old. They may flower from old canes, so don't remove old canes until they are dead.

I contacted the grower and was told that this is a Dendrobium Alien 395. Has anyone had experience with them?

Not a registered hybrid so no way of knowing its exact parents. (The hybridizer probably likes it that way...) But normal Den-phal care. Warmth, bright light, no winter rest. And enjoy!
