coming back to this thread I do have to admit I am swayed too much by what my orchids are doing at any one time.
If I had to pick a favorite, I don't have one * yet.
I got hooked once I decided I wanted to see what all the different fragrant ones smelt like so that is my ongoing mission which gives me most reward I suppose.
I knew in order to accomplish my mission I had to find better ways than the generic way to grow orchids, for example spraying an orchid daily is just too much work. I still have some I have to spray daily but the aim is to reduce them as much as possible.
Like another grower said any they can pot up and does ok for them is a win.
I am quite proud of some of the things I have discovered and I mentioned recently how big my collection has grown (yet I'd dread to think how much bigger some other people's collection is, I think at some point the collections get so big the growers don't even know themselves anymore.
I am still continuously learning and initially the time it takes to grow them is what put me off but it makes the reward better too. Like a finely aged wine. The best feeling is discovering a new flower spike one day, it's that eureka moment that you have been caring for the plant well. Then waiting for the flowers to open is the agonising part. The flowers are nice, then comes seeing how long they stay open for and trying to get them to stay open for as long as possible.
I've recently even started adding flowers I would never really dream of buying just to see what they smell like
