So sorry, I didnt mean to suggest you should have only bought one genus, I meant when you start to create your spreadsheet chose the genus you have the most of, that gets a large portion of the work done when you are keen.
Adding photos by hyperlink is quite easy.
Once your photos are in a folder just click hyperlink within the excel spreadsheet, find the folder containing the photos, choose the one required, type in how you want it to appear in the spreadsheet.
Mine appears as the plant number in the photo column. All I do is click the number (its done in blue to show its a link) and the photo appears.
With every photo you add it gets easier, as the computer knows which folder you chose before.

Oh crumbs...the photo thing sounds complex!
I am glad I'm allowed to have a varied collection!!!!
What is it with these plants? I am totally engrossed and have been all Summer. I suppose it is a fitting hobby for the Pandemic times.
Thanks so much. I find it confusing with the thread, knowing who wrote what! I thought you were Keith.

actually having a picture assigned to each like that sounds really good.
I was thinking I can do everything I do in word but adding a linked picture I am missing.
In time once things get too complicated I might have to start.
Liodoro, adding the hyperlink is very easy, just check on google for a quick tutorial. It's just adding 300 pictures takes time, ha.
Hmm, nah I will stick to naming my picture files and using folders to organize by year. Less work...

The numbers do remind you of what you have lost, alas, but the benefits outweigh that downside. Just like, you can save the tags of the deceased, and you probably will for awhile. Eventually you get to where you need the space, and dump them. The statement that "An expert is someone who has killed 1000 orchids" is 'way low. Over a lot of years, I have had a lot more fatalities than that, and I think that I have moved to the "advanced novice" level - certainly no expert. I do my best to learn from the failures... as I get better success, though, I'm encouraged to try new things. So always learning, but also always losing a few.

When you open Excel you should see lots of wording across the top.
Choose Insert
You should see Hyperlink about the middle across the top.
The icon looks like a globe with a chain.
If you Google using
'hyperlinks in Excel'
Im sure there will be lots of information, some probably even easier than I mentioned.
Regarding knowing who is making the post.
If you look at this post where the brighter yellow bar with the name on the left and their location and post statistics on the right that is the person making the post. Within the body of their message they may include comments other posters have made. You should see the post you made earlier.
Hope this helps.

A hyperlink is a "map" to a resource (file, website, etc) outside of the program (or web screen) you are in. You use them all the time when you're on the 'net, and click on a bit of text (usually underlined) where the cursor changes to a hand with a little pointed finger. You can use these on your own computer, as Diane56 Victor indicated, to "point" to a photo file from inside Excel (or Word, etc) Another reason to be systematic with your photo file naming and location - if, along with the other information about a plant, you store a hyperlink (often shortened to "link") to the file, you can jump to a picture while you're looking at the rest of the info about your plant.

If you're doing all this recordkeeping make sure to water your plants every week or two.

I voice record on my phone as Im dealing with the plants
Although I have been known to take the laptop out into the garden when I intend to spend a long time with my plants and enter information directly.....gives me chance to sit down.
Any adding to the spreadsheet is done after the plants have been sorted or at night, sometimes even later in the week.
I find it a simple solution to keep relevant information.
