Help! Broken roots/stems

I put my orchids on a riser this morning. Previous to my current place, they were on a dresser even to a south facing window. She got a lot of light ... so I'm not sure why her leaves are so long? I was in the mindset that it was a good thing, but I could definitely be wrong! Currently, she's a foot away (I read that's the recommended distance, should I be placing her closer to the window?) from a southern facing window, and was less than 6" below the ledge of the window. I've moved her up a bit though this morning, so we'll see if that extra bit of light helps. Thanks for your help!

Some Phal hybrids naturally have long leaves. They are low light plants that tolerate higher light. They don't need sun shining on the leaves.

Yeah, I'm thinking she just maybe has naturally long-ish leaves. She's always had pretty good, southern window light available.

Possibly. If it is getting southern window light, that should be enough even if you have triple-pane window glass and a screen. If the leaves are lively healthy-looking light green, light is probably not a problem.



At this point, we may be over-thinking things and over optimizing. Whatever you're doing appears to be working just fine.

I went ahead and decided to repot my orchid tonight in the carousel pot I bought for her. Also used the imperial dark mix from repotme. I’m glad I decided to do it … she needed it The potting mix was pretty broken down and sticking to the roots pretty badly in some spots. There was also a plug.

Luckily, only one healthy root broke and there went too many dead ones. I’m not sure who was stressed more, me or my orchid, for real, lol. I was having some anxiety for sure. But, it’s all finished. I soaked the pot afterwards for fifteen minutes.

How long do you think I should wait until I water again? Also, there’s a darkish area on my basal keiki leaf on the underside. I can’t tell if it’s been sunburned or if that side just hasn’t gotten enough light yet being that is still fairly small and tucked under another leaf. There’s not really any other sunburn marks on my other leaves.

I’m hoping the stress of the repot and new medium doesn’t affect the growth she was doing too much.

I wait 2 days then begin with light watering and increase them over a couple weeks. New media usually helps because it is usually very dry and takes a while to thoroughly wet.
