Is it time to repot? I recently got a catasetum with one old bulb and one new fully matured bulb with active root growth. The plant is so big for the pot that it can’t even stand upright without falling over; I just want to make sure this will not interfere with its development. Thank you for your time
Don't even think about it until the plant loses its leaves and goes dormant! Just drop the pot into a terracotta pot for weight, or otherwise support it. Catasetinae should only be repotted when they are dormant, or just starting to come out of dormancy in the spring. It will be fine sprouting roots outside the pot and vertically. And those roots will still be good next year when it is starting to push out the new roots. Roots more than a year old are dead or dying, that's just what these do. To learn about managing Catasetinae, go to the Catasetum forum and search for the videos by isurus79. This group of orchids is very different from the others, and has very specific cultural needs.
Thank you once again. I watched a lot of his videos last night. I look forward to growing these; I just got a black hybrid from SVO at a recent orchid show
