Agreed. I chose charcoal since I had some extra laying around that I made for my vanda. Normally I would have ordered bark online, but I am moving to college soon and it wouldn’t arrive in time. So given my situation I decided to choose charcoal since I could repot quicker and hopefully prevent any further damage to new growth. That being said, I still think the charcoal looks nice and its convenient that it will not break down anytime soon.
Since I never use it (I don't think I even have any) I defer to other members of the Board who know more about the chemical characteristics of it. It definitely will be long lasting, I don't know if there will be issues with adsorbing fertilizer ions, etc to its surface. I know that some people add it to their mixes to help reduce acidity from breakdown of bark... since alkalinity not acidity is likelier in my environment, I am not very familiar with its properties.
