So a den phal I bought on Ebay is flowering however I specifically remember it was not supposed to be pink, well to start with it was a bit purpley but what are my odds?
It is looking very pinkish to me

Guess that is a risk of buying on Ebay. It should open any day to know for sure. I do wonder what it will look like.

Shade ----- got pics from the listing? Just the pics of flowers from the ebay listing that is.

Totally agree about ebay risks! In Australia, there are various good ebay orchid-sellers with good reputations, and other sellers that show pics of their orchid - and the flowers, with very good feedback from buyers.

Although ------ I have encountered (but not purchases from) a couple ebay seller of orchids that were putting up misleading information - such as putting up a pic of an actual C. forbesii ----- but listing details fine print (not hard to spot unless you go through all the details) saying the 'actual' orchid for sale is a hybrid between forbesii and something else. The pic wasn't even their own.

OOOooooooohh! But it is MY kinda color! Simply gorgeous, and I'm officially jealous. Did this come with a name at all, so I could search for one?

Thx WW,
I'm pretty sure it is a Dendrobium bigibbum var compactum. That is what it was sold as. It is about half the size of a regular den phal so that probably is right I'd say. Glad you like it.

clossest match I could find was on this page there's a few different colors but it is a bit of a gamble to find exactly what one is looking for I think

Well, heck. It looks like one of those that ya pays yer money and takes your chances unless you find a specific one for sale... like the Dendrobium bigibbum 'Lilac' for example. Real deal lavender or purplish, yes. Pink is a real deal-breaker for me.

Guess I will start searching for my needle in the haystack.

Exact color usually has an element of chance. Mericlones of specific cultivars should be close to what is expected (being a genetic copy) but even there, light and temperature can affect color. If not a specific cultivar, more likely to vary - Den bigibbum (the species) comes in a range of colors from white to purple, and hybrids likely to have variation too. So just enjoy nature's bounty... Unless a named cultivar, only way to be sure is to buy in bloom. Fortunately, shows are starting to happen.
