Default Water Roots

Hello,

Water Roots

I have an Lc Loog Tone SD Golden Apple. I've had it several years and it blooms every year. It has never been repotted. It's in a plastic pot in a terracotta pot in a plastic window box. I keep about a 1/4 to 1/2 water the bottom of the window box. Now, the aerial roots have grown around and attached themselves to the terracotta and have grown into the water in the window box. It appears to be happy as this year it's the tallest and has the most blooms ever! I don't think I should try to move or repot it as that might kill it.
I'm in San Francisco.

Should I attempt a repot or leave it as is?

Billy

I'd be inclined to leave it alone - the inside of the pot is becoming irrelevant - roots on the outside of the moist terracotta have basically turned it into a mounted plant, the roots going down into the water have adapted to that environment. It looks great! So... not broken, don't try to fix! Orchids are amazing in their ability to adapt, breaks all the rules but orchids don't read books.

If it grows nicely year after year in that way, then that is really nice - and really great. The orchid's roots have adapted to grow in those particular conditions.

If an orchid doesn't have to be moved ----- (ie. if no need to move it) ------ then it'll be great to just leave it as-is.

Very nice flowers with red lip. Very nice capture!

Ohh incidental I was wondering about this one and I know people hate this question but I was undecided because I only want to add nicely fragrant ones. I saw it in the shop recently and it's compact but what does it smell like?
I'm hoping you can give me a little bit of guidance.
I'm just interested in your opinion on what it smells like to you, whether you like the smell and how powerful it is.

It's on my maybe list and maybe it should stay there but yours does look very nice.

It's difficult to describe, but it's a very very light pleasant sweet scent noticeable about two foot away.

It didn't have any notable scent the first few years and has become more fragrant the past two years.

And it was my very first orchid I found on the sidewalk!!!

cheers, Billy
