Tiny bumps on phal leaves should I worry? Female
Default Tiny bumps on phal leaves should I worry?

Recently I got this phal on clearance at QFC. It was left outside on a rack in the hot weather. Felt sorry for it. All the blooms were gone except one. I couldnt resist so I brought it home, repotted in fresh bark and sphagnum moss mix. Leaves look nice and shiny but there are 2 leaves with tiny bumps. Is this something to worry about? Should I isolate the plant? I'm attaching some pictures.

I don't know what those are. They might be caused by physical damage (bumps, pokes or scrapes) or by insect bites.

It's a good idea to isolate all new plants for a few weeks.

Yeah I hope they are not insect bites. I guess best thing will be to isolate the plant. Actually isolation has become a bit of challenge with the warm weather now. There are only few places where I can place the orchids without having them get sunburn or overheated. Upstairs gets hot during the day and I'm having to place all my orchids downstairs.

Probably a mild case of edema (also sometimes spelled oedema).

It can be caused by uneven watering; a response to too much water during growth, or sometimes temperature changes.

Mild cases are not harmful. They are more of a symptom (in people, compare to a sneeze). There is no treatment needed, but those bumps won't go away. My plants are often outside in proper weather (like right now) so I rarely have plants that are totally free of edema. Indoors, if you are watering normally but occasionally water too much, you might see this symptom, though I think it is likely to be more of an issue outdoors.

I am not 100% sveta but I don't think spots like these are harmful. I know I've had one of them on at least one of mine.

It does look like edema seeing some of the pics online. When I tried scrapping off the bumps I could see they were filled with fluid. Glad that its nothing serious.
