It's true what E.S. wrote ---- which is why I wrote basic members (like myself and the OP) can edit our post. I know that paid members can delete their posts though.
The "delete our own text" (by means of edit mode) might not 'delete' our post (to it's entirety) ----- but is a way to remove what (for example) the OP wanted to remove - in terms of what they typed that is.
And then ----- after that - a message to an admin can then allow the whole record of that post to be removed - so that no traces of the post exists (or at least no longer visible to any regular members).
My message to the OP is based on - if he/she wanted to immediately (urgently) erase text that they typed, which they decided that they no longer want other (regular) forum members to see ------ as in remove from public view ---- then the 'edit' (and text deletion) followed by 're-save' method is the quickest and most effective way to do it. It is immediate.
They can then (afterwards) always ask the moderator to remove the record of their post. Once a moderator eventually gets around to deleting the record, then the post will no longer be lying around. At least - no longer visible in public view.
