Just wondering if a set up with three 26watt CFL's would be enough total light to grow a small group of phals. I want to have two shelves, and hang the lights from the top shelf and have the plants on the second shelf. I have reflectors for the lights, but I'm worried they might get very hot during use. I'd like at least a 36in long by 20in deep shelf. Is this enough light, or do I really have to wait and get more plants until I get a bigger place?
If that's the only source of light, I don't think it's enough. The bulbs are fine, it's just the distance away. I use 105 watt CFs (3 of them) just to supplement south window daylight.
How far away would they need to be? The shelving unit is two seperate shelves, so I can adjust the distance. The lights are clamp ons. I was planning to clamp them directly to the top shelf. If this won't work, I'm moving!!
I measured a 23 watt I have in basement and read a tad of 700 foot candles at 3". I think you need to try and provide at least 1000 foot-candles. Can you get brighter bulbs? Check this site Compact Fluorescent - 65 Watt - Full Spectrum 6500K - Sunlite #05577-65 Light Bulb This 65 watt would provide almost 3 times the light of your 26 watt model. They should work in a reflector as well.
